Due to the distance to be traveled and the number of places to be visited, we need to make an early start. Departing from Swakopmund early morning, we head for the Namib section of the Namib Naukluft Park. The first stop will be at the lichen-covered gravel plains. Here, for the trained eye or the observant, there are more plants to be seen per square meter, than anywhere else in Namibia per square meter. The next stop will be the Moon Landscape and we then drive further to the big prehistoric plant, the Welwitschia Mirabilis. Interesting plant life and insects also occur in this area. We head further into the park. Ostrich, Springbok and Oryx can be seen, and sightings of Lappet-Faced Vultures and Jackals are possible further into the park. We stop over at Blutkuppe to relax a bit, and then continue to an area where wind and nature together play sculpture artist. War graves and fortification of German troops are found en route to the Tinkas. We visit the Rock Arch and surrounding area. Time will now tell whether we do the 4x4 route, or take a different route and head back to the coast. Arrival will be late afternoon, early evening. As the Namib Naukluft is such a large park it really needs a couple of days to explore, and this tour is just a glimpse of the vastness of the area and the mosaic of landscapes and scenery. As we are in the desert, daytime temperatures can be very hot in summer, and walking trails should only be done early morning or late afternoon.
The Tinkas Nature Walk is also found here, and takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete. Should these walks be included in the tour, the tour will change to a camping trip of 2 - 3 days. The duration of such a camping trip will also depend on what you want to see and how quickly we progress on the walks. The camping will be basic since the only facilities available will be a pit latrine and a camping spot. Everything else we need has to be transported by us like water, food, tents, etc. Another trail that can be added is the Rock Sculpture trail. |
