The tour to the Welwitschia mirabilis can be done either in the morning or afternoon, and can be combined with tours to the Coastal towns, or Cape Cross tours. Departing from Swakopmund we head along a route that will take us to a viewpoint and some interesting rock formations in the Moon Landscape. Many fascinating rock formations and examples of plant life occur here. We’ll drive into a landscape that has been formed over millions of years, and en route we’ll stop at a plant that has been a source of food for animals and humans over centuries, viz., the !Nara. The lichen growth, minerals and rock formations are interesting in this area, and a stop is made to walk in the area . We then head for the Welwitschia mirabilis plants as well as other interesting plant life in the area. There are numerous photographic opportunities. We'll study the insects found on the plants and you’ll observe that each plant is a living community; an island of life in this harsh landscape. The return route will take us into the Swakop River, and we’ll follow it down to about 12 km from town. Along the way there are beautiful rock formations and a variety of plant life. Sightings of ostrich, klipspringer and springbok can be made, as well as small insects and reptiles. |
